Is Pot in Your Future?

July 1st, 2018 will be a special day in Canadian history. On that date, recreational marijuana will be legal for this first time in the country. There are restrictions in place, and these will likely vary from province to province. However, those who enjoy smoking marijuana will be able to do so (edibles will likely be another year down the road). Do you already smoke pot? Are you planning to try it next year for the first time?

Whatever your level of experience with cannabis, you certainly won’t be alone if you plan on smoking on our next Canada Day. Approximately 4-6 million Canadians will use marijuana when it becomes available in stores.

However, they may find themselves disappointed on the big day. But not in the quality, but the quantity available. If the experience down south is anything to go by, demand will greatly outstrip supply for some time to come. While production has ramped up considerably in the past few months across the country, suppliers here have regularly had trouble supplying enough product for the 170,000 medical marijuana users. Now that that demand will be increasing by a factor of about 30, you had best be prepared for sell outs and other delays.

Alas, this issue will likely not just be for the first few months. American states were not able to fully meet demand until 2-3 years after legalization. As of this writing, not every province has even announced whether they will have stores open by July 1st (don’t worry—you can also order online).

According to the government, the main reason for legalization is to take criminals out of the equation. However, that won’t be happening until any supply problems have subsided. There is also a question of potency; will government-grown pot have the THC levels that hardcore users typically get from their dealers? If not, there will continue to be an underground market.

Caregiver 101

Whether it is your job or something you do out of love, being a caregiver can be highly rewarding. However, if you are not careful, it can also take a real toll on you. Caregivers tend to be people who excel at self-sacrifice in order to help others, but they sometimes do it at the expense of their own physical and mental health. That is a real problem because how can you look after someone else if you are not properly looking after yourself?

Here are some key things to remember if you are a caregiver:

learn new skills

Being a caregiver is in some ways a job like any other: you learn as you go and get better at it as time passes. Reach out to doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel who can provide you with tips on how to learn the new skills that will make life easier for both you and the person you are looking after.

make sure you have some time off

This may sound like the most obvious, but it also is the most important. Be sure to make arrangements so that you get enough respite time per month in order to be able to keep on top of your duties and maintain emotional balance. It is also a good idea to use this time to do something that will take your mind completely away from your caregiving duties.

Get support if you need it

Some people regard seeking support as a sign of weakness, but it is really a sign of strength. It means that you are cognizant of your needs as a caregiver and are taking steps to ensure that you can continue at the same level. Support can be in the form of therapy, caregiver support groups, or even just friends who will have your back when you need them. Never be afraid to reach out.

The Value of Quiet Time

Are you are leading a life where silence is almost an unknown quantity? So many of us nowadays spend an increasingly large percentage of our day in virtual panic mode. There are multiple things that need to be done and just as many deadlines on the horizon. This means we do not have a chance to sit down and, to use an old phrase, smell the roses.

This is unfortunate because it is not healthy to always be on the go. Both our bodies and minds need quiet time: occasions when we are not thinking about work or friends or family or problems or money… or anything else that causes us physical and mental stress.

Some people might say, well, if I am not doing anything, then I feel bored. Some people who worry about their personal productivity will feel guilty. However, quiet time allows for important processes such as, creativity, reflection, and recollection.

Sometimes things do not work out because we simply have not had enough time to properly plan them. Quiet time allows you to think things through to the extent that you end up with the result that is satisfying and accurate.

These moments are also a wonderful time to exercise your creativity. Do whatever it takes to block out the rest of the world and luxuriate in the quiet. This allows your brain to concentrate fully on the task at hand and for you to live in the moment. Both are prerequisites for great art and satisfying creative expression. There is a reason that artists live in spaces that are often distant from the hustle and bustle and noise of their general surroundings.

Quiet time is also good for reducing your level of stress. That brings down your blood pressure and helps to decrease the likelihood of serious issues like heart attack and stroke.

Good Equipment is a Must for Good Treatment

Whenever you employ a technician to provide a service for you, you expect them to know their job backwards and forwards. You also expect that the tools they use while performing that work will also be up to snuff. Otherwise, the work they do will suffer and not offer the high quality you expect, leading to extra costs and some unhappy repeat visits.

This also applies to dentists, though this is an area where the general public probably does not have as much knowledge. Most people know a little about cars, while those who are real gearheads will know right away when a mechanic is using sub-standard equipment to work on their vehicle.

We’re guessing that, when you go to the dentist, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about the handpiece or other equipment on the tray beside you. As your dentist and his assistant are professionals, you just trust in their judgment and pride to ensure that their equipment is as good as it needs to be to properly treat your teeth.

A name in high quality dental tools, Sable prides itself on selling high quality components and equipment. Cutting corners does no one any good in the long term, so Sable – Dental Equipment goes the whole nine yards and offers products that have been tested for both accuracy and longevity.

They may cost more upfront than a low-quality knockoff from China, but these dental pieces will last longer and deliver the best results. That means a more consistent flow of satisfied customers, more positive word of mouth from those people, and more repeat visits. It also helps a dental practice maintain a favorable social media presence. Many people rely on online reviews before trying a business; those with many negative reviews can find themselves at a great disadvantage.

Safety Tips for Camping This Long Weekend

Isn’t summer just flying by! We are approaching the end of July and the dawning of the August long weekend. Many people like to schedule their yearly family camping trip during this statutory holiday and are working on getting their supplies together.

Have a great time on your camping excursion, but do not forget about looking after yourself and fellow vacationers while out there. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

Wild Animals

It’s great to see animals out there in their native habitat, but there are some you should definitely avoid contact with (e.g. bears). Watch them from a safe distance and do not approach. Make sure that your children and pets observe this rule. In addition to physical harm, some animals carry diseases that will affect humans.

Bug Repellent

It is also possible to get diseases from insects. Make sure to wear bug repellent on all exposed skin areas. Watch out also for ticks; if you find one, follow these instructions for safe removal.

Sun Block

Unless you get non-stop rain, you will be spending a huge amount of your time outdoors, so that makes it more important than ever to protect against the damage that ultra violet rays can do to your skin. Wear an appropriate level of sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat. Also, plan activities so that they occur later in the day, after the sun’s brightest period in the early afternoon.

Beware of Drowning

Try to always have someone with you while swimming (this is especially important if the swimmer suffers from medical conditions that cause physical distress, such as seizures). Do not swim if you are intoxicated. Avoid swimming during stormy conditions or if lightning is present. Try not to swallow any water and shower before and after your time in the lake or river. If boating, always wear a government-approved life jacket.

Working at Heights Training in Ontario

On May 18, 2017, a construction employer in Ontario was fined $10,000 and sent to jail for failing to ensure his worker had proper fall protection when working at heights.

The employer, Steve Bell, was charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act after a Ministry of Labour inspection found one of his workers working at a height of 26 feet without any fall protection. Under the law, the worker should have had a travel restraint system, a safety net, or another fall-restricting system. Bell spent one day in prison and was also ordered to pay a $10,000.

This sentence serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring workers are safe and receive working at heights training in Ontario.

Health and Safety in the Construction Industry

Working at heights without the proper safety precautions is one of the leading causes of work-related deaths in Ontario. The risk is especially great for those in the construction industry, including roofers like the one in the above example.

There are about 500,000 workers in the construction industry in Ontario. Construction only accounts for 6.7% of provincial employment, but is responsible for a third of work-related deaths and occupational disease fatality claims.

36% of deaths in the construction industry are caused by falls from heights.

Health and safety has always been a challenge in the construction industry. Many workplaces have fewer than 20 workers, meaning they do not have a JHSC (Joint Health and Safety Committee.) In Ontario, only workplaces with 20 workers or more must have a committee. Many workers also continually change workplaces, and hazards on a job site can change as the work progresses.

Mandatory Working at Heights Training

To improve work conditions, the government passed a regulation requiring all employers to ensure workers on construction projects who need to use fall protection complete a working at heights training program by an approved training provider. This has been a requirement since April 1, 2015.

Recently, the government of Ontario also implemented a Construction Health and Safety Action Plan. The plan incorporates 16 recommendations designed to prevent work-related injury and illness for construction workers in on sites across the province. As part of this initiative, the government is working to develop online tools, apps, and web portals to empower Ontario JHSCs and provide easy access to health and safety information.
